Introduction

As we conclude April, we are halfway through the NSG season, with many sports CCAs preparing and training three times a week. At the same time, our performing arts CCAs are gearing up and putting in extra time for their performances in light of Humanities and Aesthetics Week and their various events. Well, ¿?sickbeats?¿ has taken it upon ourselves to deliver you a playlist to appreciate the hard work of our fellow Eunoians!

Badminton

Alicia Keys’ “Girl On Fire” resonated the most with our badminton team. With the prominent fire imagery, the song definitely reflects our badminton players’ burning passion as they train and play against their opponents. As the shuttlecock shoots back and forth across the net, the heat gets turned up as the court is set ablaze with our players’ determination. An easily recognisable song, with a widely beloved sport; we hope our badminton team is able to keep the flames in their eyes burning even in the face of formidable opponents.

Basketball

Basketball’s pick is“Party Rock Anthem”, particularly, the rendition by The Chipmunks and The Chipettes. With a high bpm of 130, this boppy song is perfect for getting a hit of adrenaline, be it during warm-ups or an intensive match. In addition, the cover by the famous pop group, The Chipmunks and The Chipettes, takes on a much higher key than the original song by LMFAO. This creates the illusion of the song being more upbeat with a faster tempo, making one energised and refreshed when they listen to it. As the lyrics go, “The heart is in the game”, highlighting our basketball teams’ fiery passion for their sport. The song repeatedly reiterates the idea of having a good time, and we hope the same for the EJ Titans in their upcoming NSG games!

Floorball

Inspired by the battle cry of the Lost Boys in the 1991 movie “Hook”, the onomatopoeia “Bangarang” is the song that encapsulates the rapid pace of a Floorball game. The electronic dance track features repeated distorted sounds and upbeat melodies that guarantee an earworm after just a few listens. This uplifting song carries a sense of camaraderie, referencing the “lost boys” from the classic novel “Peter Pan”. This fittingly represents the trust and friendships formed among the Floorball teammates as they prepare for their upcoming NSGs!

Hockey

“Womanizer” by Britney Spears is an empowering anthem that celebrates female strength and independence. The song’s lyrics depict a woman who sees through the deceitful actions of a man who plays with women’s emotions. Instead of being a victim, she asserts her power. With Britney’s fierce vocals, the song encourages women to stand up for themselves and not tolerate mistreatment. With EJ Hockey as an all-girls CCA, “Womanizer” is a song that represents their resilience to make every match their best.

Netball

“One Thing” by One Direction reflects the spirit of Netball CCA, showing how focused as well as dedicated the players are. The song’s lyric “You’ve got that one thing” highlights how each and every player adds something special to the team, allowing them to work together in perfect harmony. The song’s upbeat and catchy rhythm mirrors the excitement and passion felt by the players when training hard together as well as the adrenaline felt during every match.

Softball

A “Masterpiece” indeed by Jessie J, this song encapsulates the feelings of our athletes as they face the gruelling NSG season. “You haven’t seen the best of me, I’m still working on my masterpiece” is a line that we're sure fellow Eunoians – especially our Softball players – resonate with amidst their games. Emphasising resilience and self confidence, this song encourages our athletes to push their boundaries and excel in whatever CCA they represent. More importantly, the line of “I still fall on my face sometimes” conveys an important quality in sports; the ability to accept failure as part of the process and realise that it does not diminish their athletic prowess on the field. With this song on repeat, we're sure all players will manifest these qualities and play to the best of their abilities, making our school proud. Go team EJ!

Squash

This heartwarming and soothing track by wave to earth certainly encapsulates the unwavering team spirit of EJ squash. The beginning of the song, translated, says “Each person has their own desires, painted together”, a sentiment that the team proudly embodies. The line reflects how each team member’s individuality intertwines with each other in perfect cohesion, allowing their fiery team spirit to always burn bright, no matter the setbacks. Though the journey through NSG won’t be easy for our squash athletes, they will undoubtedly be able to endure whatever hardships they may face together as a close-knitted family.

Table Tennis

With its upbeat and fast-paced rhythm, DJ Khaled’s beat resonates with the Table Tennis team as they hype themselves up moments before the big game. On the way to competitions, the song provides them with an adrenaline rush, with the lyrics "All I do is win, win, win, no matter what" instilling in them the determination to do just that: win, no matter what. Regardless of their opponents' abilities, the motivational tone and message of the song instils an aura of confidence in the players, encouraging them to not be intimidated by anyone and to play to the best of their abilities!

Taekwondo

As a martial-arts CCA, Taekwondo aptly chose the song “Kung Fu Fighting”. This trendy song has an energetic and bold beat that infuses the team with a surge of energy and passion for their sport. Not only do the martial-arts themed lyrics perfectly encapsulate their CCA, but it also inspires confidence and empowers the team before each competition. While this song is currently trending, it also takes the team back to their childhood of watching the “Kung Fu Panda” movies, which features this song, reminding them of all they are fighting for.

Tennis

Without a doubt, Eunoia’s Tennis team puts their heart and soul into their sport. With their love for the sport and for their team, One Direction’s “18” from their album FOUR encapsulates their heartfelt emotions and passion towards not just their sport, but each other. The consistent and yet driven beats of the song reflects the racquet sport, and the closeness of the team is reflected by the line “To be loved and to be in love”

Track and Field

“The Man” by Taylor Swift, selected by Track and Field, is proven to be a great song to run to by Taylor herself, whose training routine for the Eras Tour involved her running while singing the entire tracklist! This song has the lyric “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can”, which may resonate with Track members due to the constant running they have to do. However, it is also an empowering song which can motivate them to continue running as swift as they can (haha).

Ultimate Frisbee

“Who Let The Dogs Out” by Baha Men resonates with the Ultimate Frisbee CCA through its energetic and lively vibe. The lyrics “Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof, woof!” captures the enthusiastic and competitive spirit seen during ultimate frisbee matches. Just as the song ignites excitement, Ultimate Frisbee players bring high energy and passion to each and every game. The song’s upbeat tempo mirrors the fast-paced and exhilarating moments during intense matches. Ultimately, this song captures the raw excitement and spirited nature that define the Ultimate Frisbee CCA.

Volleyball

Released as the official theme for DreamWorks’ animated film, Trolls, this feel-good track captures the infectious energy of EJ’s volleyball team. Featuring a jazzy, uptempo beat, the song illustrates the irresistible urge to get up and move with the lyrics, “I can’t stop the feelin’ So just dance, dance, dance”. This resonates with the team’s passion and enthusiasm for their sport. In the outro of the song, Timberlake employs a crowd of backup singers and audible claps to fill the musical space. This creates an uplifting atmosphere that invokes a sense of hope in listeners, reflecting the vitalising energy the volleyball team brings to their training sessions and games!

Chamber Strings

The second movement composed by Dvorak, the Czech composer known as the master of melody, consists of spellbinding melodies and super symphonies. Opening with a lifting dance melody in C# minor, with violin transitions into the second theme in A major, this piece of romantic music is different from the usual popular music that Chamber Strings covers. Despite being significantly harder to coordinate, Chamber Strings has been working diligently to give a cohesive performance, and thus the song encapsulates the team effort put into perfecting the piece such that it encapsulates the “serenade” aspect in a lovely manner. The journey working together on this piece has brought Chamber Strings much closer as a team!

Chinese Orchestra

火把节之夜 - 王云飞

“火把节之夜 “ or also known as “Night of the Torch Festival” is a popular chinese orchestral piece composed by 王云飞 (Wang YunFei). This unique song choice is one of the many pieces that the Chinese Orchestra is currently learning. The piece incorporates traditional Chinese melodies and musical elements, making it a culturally rich choice for Chinese Orchestra. It reflects the heritage and traditions of Chinese music, providing members with a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. This song is filled with lively rhythms and rich harmonies, making it a memorable and enjoyable piece for members to perform, fostering dedication and teamwork among them.

Choir

“声部介绍歌” also known as “The Song of Voice Parts”, sung by The Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Singers, is a unique song recommended by Choir. The song introduces the different sections in a choir and how each of them add unique flavours to different parts of a song. These traits also highlight the foundations of Choir, that although they may have different individual sections, they shine the brightest when they come together as one. While each section may have its strengths and weaknesses, their close bond with each other adds colour to their melodious voices, allowing them to be united as Choir!

Dance

Up next is “Don’t Give Up On Me” by Andy Grammer, a song from the movie, “Five Feet Apart”. The song depicts the two main characters of the movie battling Cystic Fibrosis together, and the lyrics of the song have also struck a chord with our Dancers. Having to keep up with so many strenuous routines and choreographies, we're sure that there are often times when they feel as though their hearts have been beaten “black and blue”. Yet, they still pick themselves up as a group, bound by their love for dance and each other, pushing through to give us amazing performances!

Drama

Serving as the opening theme for season 2 of the anime television series Mashle: Magic and Muscles is an upbeat song called “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” by Japanese hip hop duo Creepy Nuts. Chosen by EJ Drama to be a part of their SYF performance, the song serves as an inspirational ode to the courage it takes to bare one’s soul on the stage. “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” is an anthem of self-achieved success, telling the story of victory and defiance against all odds.

Rock Band

“对你爱不完”, also known as “I Love You Forever” is a song by Hong Kong singer Aaron Kwok. Held closely in the hearts of many JC2 rock band members, the practice session for this song marks not only the hard work each band member put in to bring their unique talents to the team, but also how it was the first time every instrument in the 12 people band had a chance to shine in this song. As a key milestone that brought the team together by uniting everyone’s individual skill sets, this song is one to be remembered.

Street Dance

Beyonce’s 2011 hit, “Who Run the World (girls)” was aptly chosen by EJ Street Dance. The song's energetic beat and catchy chorus sends an empowering message to all the girls in the world. As an all girls CCA, they truly show us power and confidence, and charm us endlessly whenever they take to the stage. “Who run the world?(Girls) We run this mutha’.” This song was performed and adapted into many movies and shows, most famously, in Pitch Perfect 2. My persuasion can build a nation. Endless power, with our love we can devour.” Beyonce’s lyrics encapsulate the fact that women are equal to men, and that women are powerful, yet still loving and caring. Beyonce's song has encouraged and rallied girls everywhere to stand tall, stand strong and stand proud.

Symphonic Band

“Symphony” — an apt title to represent EJ’s very own Symphonic Band. It is an emotional song that captures the essence of love and longing. The lyrics tell a story of a person who feels incomplete without their partner, comparing their love to a symphony that is beautifully orchestrated. Zara Larsson’s angelic vocals are the cherry on top; exuding great passion for a loved one. Overall, “Symphony” is a moving tribute to the transformative power of being in harmony with a special someone. Likewise, our talented Symphonic Band can orchestrate such wondrous and meaningful tunes for us to indulge in.
