Introduction Just like a well-executed prank, crushes can leave us feeling giddy, bewildered, and sometimes a little foolish. In this article, we’ll explore a curated playlist of love songs that capture the whimsical and often humorous side of infatuation. From catchy tunes that celebrate the highs of having a crush to cheeky anthems that poke fun at love's little mishaps, these songs remind us that love can be just as playful as any April Fools' joke. So, get ready to embrace the fun of falling head over heels—because this April, it’s all about being a fool for you!

“Say yes to heaven, say yes to me. I've got my eye on you.” Lana Del Rey’s lyrics perfectly capture the raw experience of yearning – the aching desire for someone and hope that your love might be reciprocated. This song is a quiet confession, with a kind of melancholy woven into its melody that reflects how we cling to even the slightest possibility of romance and love, even when uncertainty lingers. It’s the essence of pining, of wanting, and hoping that maybe, just maybe, they’ll say yes.

“Love me, love me, say that you love me…” Isn’t this what we all feel when our crushes walk by? The lyrics in this song encapsulates the feelings of one sided yearning that many of us have experienced. This pop song peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s radio song chart in 1997 written by The Cardigans, transcending time and space as teenagers worldwide belt their heart out alongside the mournful lyrics and catchy tune. It’s full of desperation and longing as they barely give you a passing glance, hidden in a Trojan horse of upbeat music.  Lovefool, as the title indicates, expresses how we are when in love, just a little bit of a fool for them.

“All I really want is you,” Maria Zardoya, lead singer of indie pop band The Marias, confesses (a whopping ten times!) in the band’s 2021 track of the same title. Coupled with its ethereal production, the song’s hypnotic repetition creates a yearning that toes the line between tenderness and anguish. Unsurprisingly, this resonates deeply with countless young listeners, capturing the universal, all-consuming fixation on the one person they may want, but can never have.

Waves of guitar fill this daydream of a song, instantly enchanting listeners. ‘You don’t even try to, Make me feel the way I feel when you’re around’, Through hushed vocals, Unflirt intimately admits to so easily pining over someone. Putting her heart on her sleeve, she ponders, ‘Am I wasting my time?’. A beautifully distorted guitar solo leaves room for us to dance in the foolishness of it all. The last chorus then chimes in with Unflirts’ decided hopefulness to end her discretion ‘one day’. This song is perfect for a rainy bus ride or when you are in the mood to think about that certain someone!

‘Knew I was falling when I looked inside your eyes…I know you are, what am I?’ What Am I by Why Don't We reflects the essence of young love and hopeful desires, with the lyrics telling a vivid story of a chance encounter that blossoms beautifully into a whirlwind romance. This song is for the delulu people out there who have someone you fancy, or for those who are experiencing budding romance. This laid back, R&B-pop song is definitely worth a listen, regardless of whether you are a single pringle, crushing hard, or in a relationship!

Beabadoobee’s lyrics and tone in this song perfectly capture the buzzing excitement of having a crush. You see them around and they instantly catch your eye. You want to strike a conversation, but how? “We don’t talk much, guess 'cause nothing has changed,” captures how every slightly awkward conversation between you two is a reminder of how your crush is still just a crush. However, instead of feeling hopeless about this situation, Beabadoobee has an insistent and hopeful tone, nearly daring the other to ignore the existing awkwardness and just make the first move. “You know me, you better show me that you could say it to my face,” is targeted right at them, challenging them to say how they really feel. The song is the definition of ‘attract, don’t chase,’ which is what everyone wants in their love life.

But alas, the moment only lasts for mere seconds, and you have nothing but this fluke of a passing glance to think about till the next time you see them in the hallways…. You wish this crush would have better prospects but they don't even know your name….

Alicia Keys’ timeless and powerful vocals are able to strongly express the acute feelings of frustration you may feel, knowing that you may never have a shot with them, yet being in wonderment at not being able to stop thinking about them. Produced by Kanye West in 2003, who sampled “ Let me prove my Love to you”, a soul classic by The Main Ingredient, “You Don’t Know My Name” was a hit off an album that won Keys a Grammy that year. “It's about that feeling you have when you see somebody that you really, really like, or at least you think you do. And you are trying to figure out, how am I supposed to say anything to this person?”, expressed Keys in a 2012 concert. Despite being released in 2004, this song remains ever relevant to us even in 2025!
