Introduction
While this year’s Coachella took place in April, its festival lineup remained looped on our feeds throughout the month of May. The music festival has made its mark as one of the most awaited yearly events of the music scene, and due to its massive audience, holds a big influence on the industry’s chart climbing competition. From globally known Kpop groups, Le Sserafim and ATEEZ, to up-and-coming pop starlets, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, ¿?Sickbeats?¿ brings you the most notable moments that ensued at the Coachella Valley this year.
Weekend One featured Roan in a latex top with the words ‘eat me’ plastered across in bold. She adorned a vintage rubied black choker which complemented her bullet red earrings. Her band members (Lucy Ritter, Vleria falcon and Eliza Petrosyan) were decked in similar fashion, with capitalised ‘eat the rich’ on their own Mariano Cortez bodysuits. The pop princess’ distinct red curls and exaggerated make-up made for a promising festival debut in the desert. Chappell Roan put the audience in a trance as she belted dreamy ballads like ‘Picture You’ and ‘Casual’, off her critically acclaimed, full-length debut, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’. Her vocal stamina shone through as she brought cheerleader energy to her glittery, disco-pop tunes like ‘HOT TO GO!’ and ‘Red Wine Supernova’. Festival-goers got a taste of the Coachella newcomer’s shimmery campy aesthetic, versatile voice and captivating energy all in one execution. It is no wonder the mainstream began to pick up on Roan’s music as she gained traction from her Coachella moments. Clips of the singer engaging the audience in the now TikTok-viral ‘‘HOT TO GO!’ dance, as well as her iconic delivery of the Sasha Colby-inspired line, “I’m your favourite artist’s favourite artist.”, circulated social media and has established Chappell Roan as someone to watch.
ATEEZ, making history in the books as the first K-pop boy group to perform at Coachella, managed to put up a jaw-dropping performance for the crowd. The Sahara stage, where Korean pop boy group ATEEZ performed on both Fridays, certainly felt the energy as they graced the stage with their amazing performances and addictive setlist. From their famous hits such as “Crazy Form” and “Say My Name” to ultimate fan favourites such as “Arriba” and “Rocky” , ATEEZ never failed to capture the attention of the entire audience, with fans and non fans alike vibing to the music. ATEEZ never failed to impress the crowd through their stage presence with their intense choreographies, powerful live vocals and even up to their intricate stage set designs and props, to the extent where they had a kraken tentacle as a stage prop for their performance of “Wonderland”. To the group, Coachella was a significant highlight of their career, as shown from their efforts in engaging the crowd in English despite the language barrier in music. Furthermore, they gave eager fans a hint to their announcement of an upcoming world tour, along with the title of their newest album”Golden Hour”, which was officially announced hours later, and released on May 31st. The attention ATEEZ received from locals and online netizens certainly proved their strong presence as an act in Coachella, and bolstered their fame and success as an astounding K-pop group in the global scene.
LE SSERAFIM is a South Korean girl group formed by Source Music. Their performance at Coachella this year was a significant milestone for them, marking their first appearance at a major Western music festival. As they took to the stage, anticipation was palpable among festival-goers, many of whom were eager to see the group perform live for the first time. LE SSERAFIM performed at Coachella for two weekends, during the first week, the group faced some criticism. Technical issues and the pressure of debuting at such a high-profile event seemed to affect their performance quality leading to viewers commenting on their weak vocals and out-of-tune performance, which netizens say sounded like a “car crash”. However, despite these initial setbacks, the group's resilience and dedication shone through. By the second week, they had addressed the issues and returned to the stage with renewed vigour. Their performance during the second weekend was markedly improved, demonstrating their ability to adapt and overcome challenges. The synchronisation was tighter, the vocals stronger, and the overall stage presence more confident. This dramatic improvement did not go unnoticed and earned them widespread acclaim.
Tyler, the Creator, an innovative rapper, producer, and fashion icon, delivered a groundbreaking performance at Coachella 2024. Taking over the main stage on Saturday, Tyler showcased his unique blend of energetic rap and introspective lyrics, underscoring Coachella’s role in propelling artists to new heights of fame. Tyler’s set was an audiovisual spectacle, featuring a dynamic stage design with vibrant visuals and striking lighting that complemented his eclectic style. The performance included a mix of his biggest hits and fan favourites, such as "EARFQUAKE". The atmosphere was electric, with the audience feeding off Tyler's high-octane energy and his seamless transitions between songs. The crowd’s response was overwhelmingly positive, with fans praising Tyler’s stage presence and the immersive experience he created. Comments such as, “Tyler’s Coachella set was next-level. The visuals, the energy, the way he connects with the audience—it’s something you have to experience in person to truly understand.” and “He made the whole festival feel like one giant party. His performance of 'See You Again' was pure magic.” were made by the awestruck audience. Tyler’s performance highlighted the festival’s significance in the music industry. Tyler, the Creator’s Coachella 2024 performance was a testament to his creative genius and the festival’s power in elevating artists' profiles. His ability to transform the main stage into an immersive, high-energy experience left an indelible mark on both his career and the festival’s legacy.
The Rose is a South Korean rock indie band consisting of 4 members. Debuting in 2017, they are considered veterans in the Korean band music scene. Following their 2024 Lollapalooza appearance, The Rose continues to make a splash in the Western music scene with their performance at Coachella. Despite being less known compared to other artists, The Rose’s captivating stage presence thoroughly flooded the venue, allowing attendees to witness the band’s raw talent and heart-thumping music. Fans and Coachella-goers alike sang along and bopped to their music, thoroughly showing how music transcends all languages. For the band itself, Coachella has been a way to showcase their talents and hopefully attract more fans. It is a rare occurrence that such a band is able to perform on such a big stage like Coachella, and we hope more bands have the opportunity to perform at Coachella.
If you haven’t seen a clip of Sabrina Carpenter’s Coachella performance, then you might be living under a rock. Her awe-inspiring performance took the internet by storm, with many of her performance clips going viral, such as her ‘Feather X Lovefool’ mashup and clips from her performance of her most recent single, ‘Espresso’. And of course, is it really a Sabrina Carpenter performance without a unique variation of the ‘Nonsense’ outro? Sabrina has long been established as a charismatic and captivating performer, and she showed nothing to the contrary during her Coachella setlist. From the stage design to Sabrina’s outfits, her performance was certainly a visual treat! Beyond that, what makes her performances truly unique and excellent is Sabrina’s undeniable stage presence as a pop star! Hopefully, this charming and talented performer will continue to captivate Coachella attendees for many more years to come!
