Introduction
2023 has been a crazy year for all Eunoians, and now ¿?sickbeats?¿ brings to you our last article of the year! To close off the year, ¿?sickbeats?¿ is excited to present to you our version of EJ Wrapped, where we curate a playlist of songs that hopefully you can relate to. These songs are what we think have been the vibe of our EJC journeys this year. Enjoy!
A song that brings us back to the start of the year, all the way back to ori ‘23, Live While We’re Young was the song we all learned to dance to together. With a song and dance unique to Ori ‘23, it surely brings back many memories for us. Some of us may have felt apprehensive as we dislike dancing, while others may have relished dancing with our newfound friends. Regardless of how you may have felt when you first joined the ranks of EJC, hopefully, this song will lift your spirits as you reminisce on the past year and prepare yourself for the next.

New Romantics is not just a song about dwelling on the past; it’s a powerful anthem that looks towards a bright future. Its name draws inspiration from the 1970s youth subculture movement in the United Kingdom, known for its association with synth-pop music and flamboyant fashion. With its uplifting tempo, New Romantics captures a sense of freedom for young people who are going through tough times. The lyrics ‘Cause baby I could build a castle/ Out of all the bricks they threw at me’ create a vivid image that encapsulates the challenges and triumphs of life, resonating deeply with students. Swift’s mesmerising call-out ‘Baby we’re the new romantics/Come on, come along with me’ creates a strong sense of communion, leading listeners along to find hope and purpose. For Eunoians, this song can be the anthem that celebrates a positive outlook on academic life, encouraging them to hold onto their dreams despite the painful losses they face.
“Sunshine” by OneRepublic is a song with an upbeat tune that makes one’s worries feel far away. Many Eunoians, I’m sure, can agree that Eunoia’s school environment provides a unique sense of detachment and freedom from worries – at least when it’s time to have fun and let loose. The song’s fast pace is also comparable to how fast a year in junior college passes by, which can definitely be said for the year 2023. Additionally, the song speaks of striving for ‘a little bit of sunshine’ by really stepping into yourself and accepting the things in life. Our time spent in junior college is a little like this, with us learning how to embrace the changes in our lives and grow and improve ourselves.
Tell Me What To Do is truly fitting when describing my 2023, a year that has put all of us through a flurry of hectic events. When faced with a series of difficult situations, one might hope for someone else to ‘tell me what to do’. The confusing contrast between the upbeat dance synth track and the powerful melancholic vocals crying for help enables the listener to immerse themselves in the convoluted turmoil of clashing feelings. Although we experienced low points this year, we also had our highs, thus the conflicting emotions one might feel when reflecting on the year passed. The song closes on the last verse, echoing the title of the song, Tell Me What To Do. Similarly, let's take the last few days of 2023 as a time of introspection and reflection, so we can have a much more fulfilling 2024!
A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay is the song that wrapped up our first and most memorable experience entering EJC — Ori’ 23. The committee that brought us orientation wanted to remind us of the friends we’ve made along the way representing stars to us, “you may not see them but you know they are always there”. The song has an upbeat and energetic electronic musical arrangement, especially the chorus, but the song is also tinged with feelings of nostalgia and longing. Here’s to hoping that this song reminds all Eunoians of the many memories they’ve made this past year, as well as the people they’ve met along the way and how far we’ve all come. Remember that each and every one of you are stars who make each others’ lives better just by being in it :)

The song True Blue is about finding yourself through trust and faith in unconditional love, something I think we can all relate to as we step foot into our first year in EJ. Meeting new people can be scary, but it’s important to have faith in people and love unconditionally. Through this year, we’ve all made many new and interesting friends, forging new friendships as we grow and learn together amidst the unknown. EJ has been full of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t change it for the world 🫶🏻
Grand Escape by RADWIMPS may sound familiar to you as it’s one of the songs that plays before flag raising! Truly fitting to use a song we hear daily as one to encompass the spirit of 2023 in EJC, isn’t it? Just from the melody alone, you can hear the hesitation in the first verse before it speeds up and starts sounding more excited, encompassing our feelings at the start of the year when we first arrived at EJ, hesitant and nervous, before becoming more comfortable and excited for this new step in life. Furthermore, despite the song being related to romance, the lyrics can still resonate with us. “No way we ain't afraid, but we're not turning back/ Anticipating the crises to come, but nothing else we can do” (How we feel about A levels…)
