Introduction
November, despite being at the end of the year, brings about a sense of foreboding, especially among JC students. With exams plaguing both JC1s and JC2s, Eunoia’s ¿?sickbeats?¿ has put together a playlist to motivate Eunoians to power through not only this challenging month but also the upcoming year!
The Greatest combines vibrant pop beats with empowering lyrics, making it an ideal choice for those in search of motivational study music. The song's lyrics, particularly "I'm free to be the greatest, I'm alive", convey a message of triumph and self-empowerment. These words serve as a reminder that challenges can be conquered, fueling a positive mindset. The repetitive and catchy nature of the chorus can also help maintain a steady pace during study sessions, promoting a sense of momentum and focus. The overall upbeat and optimistic tone of the song provides an uplifting backdrop, transforming your study space into a motivational zone.
Inspired by the manga Blue Period, the song Gunjou tells the story of discovering one’s true passion and striving to excel in it, despite meeting several pitfalls along the way. While the manga itself is about breaking away from the norm to pursue visual arts, this song can be understood by anyone. As we strive to succeed in our passions, we may lose confidence in ourselves or be faced with good old imposter syndrome. After all, why are we not succeeding in something we adore? This song assures us that we are not alone in feeling this way and encourages us to push onward toward these passions. That we are improving one step at a time even if it feels like we are stuck. It reminds us that pursuing our passions can be a daunting mission that, though, when overcome, will bring us great fulfillment. So keep going! You’ll make it!
2WEI and Edda Hayes’ rendition of the iconic song Survivor presents a captivating contrast to Destiny's Child's original version. The staggered vocals, gripping melodies, and powerful bass blend seamlessly to create an anthem that resonates with the spirit of a true warrior. Listeners would be transported into the heart-pounding scenes of a thrilling movie trailer. The resolute lyrics, such as “I would self-destruct, but I'm still here / Even in my years to come, I'm still gon’ be here”, add an emotional depth that reflects future hardships and successes. In the midst of mounting stress levels among the J2s, this song may just provide the hardcore determination needed to persevere.
Sometimes all we need is a song with a good beat to feel motivated to start studying and persevere through. Eye of the Tiger by the band Survivor may be a relatively old song, but something in its melodies and beats inspires perseverance and determination – exactly what students studying for their A-Levels need. Hopefully, this song blasting through your headphones will be enough to get you in the mood to conquer the exams!
KEY of Korean group SHINee new album features the titular song Good & Great, promoting the optimistic view of pushing on even when times are hard, with the lyrics “Repeat the magic words / Ok, doing good, I’m pulling through”. The choreography even includes a move in which KEY gives himself a pat on the head. Similarly, we need to take the time to reassure ourselves that we have been trying our best and doing well. The rhythmic electro and house elements are sure to keep you focused through the long hours of revision, whilst KEY’s vocals encourage you in the background.
With Workin’ Hard, Fuji Kaze’s aim was to create music that doesn’t place undue stress on listeners and to convey a relaxed mood. The chorus, in particular, reassures us that our efforts are seen and they are worth it. “You've been workin' hard, workin' hard/ Maybe you don't understand / But I know that you're / Workin' hard” The jazz style of this motivational song expresses support and acknowledgment of one’s dedication. This song is perfect for moments when one is overwhelmed by their workload and needs to feel loved and supported.
Start Over, one of the most popular OST tracks of the hit Korean drama Itaewon Class is a motivating, upbeat song that encourages a fighting spirit in those who listen to it, even if one is facing a lot of challenges and helplessness. The song gives listeners a ray of hope that anyone and everyone can rise from the shackles of burden and misery if one has the will to do so. Even if you are struggling to get through this tough exam period, remember that your hard work will still pay off in the end! Through the uplifting vocals and beats of the track, we hope that your passion will be ignited to push through the last stretch of exams ahead, and put in your very best to achieve your dreams! Hang in there, don’t give up, and don’t lose hope as much as possible! You can achieve your dreams too! :)
Fight Song serves as a source of empowerment during times of trials and tribulations. Just when you’re ready to give up and tell yourself to simply ‘wing’ the exam, Rachel Platten steps in to remind you of the sheer power that grit and hard work can bring! Its upbeat melody and lively rhythm are sure to be a mood booster, with its lyrics as a keen reminder for you to keep fighting on. “Losing friends and I’m chasing sleep” is a phrase I’m sure many of us can relate to while grinding hard for our upcoming examinations. Yet, Platten’s song dauntlessly declares that amidst tiresome times, she continues fighting on, reminding us to do so as well!
With the phrase “If I fail, I’ll fall apart,” MARINA perfectly captures the universal fear we all experience as we study for our exams - the fear that if we fail, we fall apart. MARINA addresses those of us with imposter syndrome, questioning if our achievements become less valid as we inevitably fail. However, as we stress over our grades, it is important to remember that our achievements do not define us. While putting effort into our academics is prudent, it is just as crucial to remember to take regular breaks and avoid succumbing to our insecurities!
This song trended on TikTok during our COVID era due to its rumored ability to make one more productive (I tried it and it worked!). Furthermore, the line “I can run faster with no wind resistance” empowers one to continue working hard and succeed. With its upbeat sound, it is truly a motivational song fitting for exam preparation!
