The Curious Case of Nepo Babies

Written and Designed by: Bernita Rayen (23-I1)

Nepo babies. Have you heard of them? In 2022 these Nepo babies were all the craze. It was all the online world could buzz about. “Nepo Babies”- short for nepotism baby- is a term coined by the internet specifically to refer to children of actors, musicians, producers and other industry insiders. This term is often used in Hollywood and the American music industry to denote children involved in the same or similar career to their parents or relatives. There is an implication that these ‘Nepo Babies’ have a leg up in life inheriting their parents wealth, fame and power. These children are said to have extremely privileged lives and a boost in their careers, the same careers that thousands of average people sacrifice and work their whole lives to attain.

Why nepotism?

If you think about it, as a child growing up in singapore there is often heavy emphasis placed on merits and academic achievements. Our society and many others are built on the foundation of meritocracy, where your hard earned successes are valued and celebrated. So when you take a look at the concept of nepotism it is mind boggling! The concept completely undermines the familiar meritocratic system that millions grow up in. One could even say that, individuals that have benefitted from nepotism, who have never climbed the ladders of hierarchy or faced the trials of chasing one's dreams, are quite frankly cheating in life.

Nepotism in the creative industries

Hollywood is a hotbed of these ‘ Nepo babies’. Celebrities like Lily Rose Depp, Dakota Johnson, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Hailey Beiber and more. These children are proof of the privileges nepotism brings. Take Lily Rose Depp for example, who is the daughter of Johnny Depp, a very well known Hollywood A-list celebrity. At 17 and 160 centimetres tall, she walked her first runway show with Chanel. Some consider it the epitome of nepotism, as in order for one to be a runway model one has to be at least 176 centimetres tall. Although exceptions can be made in the uncompromising fashion world, it is seldom ever made. This goes to show the advantages these children have over the average population. The fashion industry is brutal to say the least, and thousands of aspiring models struggle to even put their feet at the door of the fashion world. Hence people’s frustrations are justifiable when they see ‘Nepo babies’ get ahead without even trying.

Why is nepotism a problem?

It goes without saying that nepotism is downright unfair. It is heartbreaking to see young talents with extraordinary abilities ignored and skipped over for  ‘Nepo Babies’ who have more connections and (more often than not) a fraction of their talents. Aside from being unfair, nepotism greatly reduces diversity, a core value of Hollywood and other creative industries in the 21st century. The arts in particular loses its creative abilities when it is unable to showcase individuals from diverse and unique backgrounds who have special stories and ideas to share. When there is a heavy endorsement of ‘Nepo Babies’ things become repetitive and perspectives become narrow. Therefore it is essential that these industries encourage new and upcoming artists, musicians and actors in order to stay relevant and in the good graces of their ever so diverse and vibrant audiences.

Why you need to care about nepotism.

Nepotism, although very prevalent in the acting and music world, is just as prevalent in the corporate and everyday world. As many of us start entering the workforce it is good to know that nepotism exists everywhere. From politics to your office, nepotism reigns subtly. Its existence cannot be denied, but it is essential for us to call out unfair treatment that negatively impacts others. This is as such acts pave the way for a lack of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. The act of nepotism itself is said to cause a lack of morale and productivity amongst workers, poor quality of goods and services and poor performance. I cannot stress the fact that  individuals need to be recognised for their talents and values rather than their connections and fame.

Conclusion

Although I do realise that ‘Nepo Babies’ have no control over the privileged life that they are born to, it is vital that they acknowledge their privileges and opportunities that they have gotten. Acknowledgment of their privilege and blessings will go to show their gratitude. I do however admit that some ‘Nepo Babies’ are actually extremely talented and have used their privilege to better themselves and that is applaudable. But some are praised for doing just the bare minimum. But it is important to bear in mind that someone will always be in a more privileged position than you are. And it's a fact. That should not dishearten you or anyone from trying and working hard to achieve success. More than anything, it's high time that people in positions of power and authority recognise individuals for their abilities rather than their last name.
